Hi Daniel - I'm going through the same problem right now and I have, basicly, done the same thing. So, now I'm in the middle of my free Hulu period, waithing to see if it's going to work once Hulu tries to take money from my US PayPal account with regular Europe based Visa credit card, but fake US billing address. Does it worked for you, at the end? Thank you in advance for your replay, Marko

In reply to <a href="https://randominsanity.net.nz/2014/10/home-automation-openhab-z-wave/#comment-7822">Rahul</a>.

G'day Rahul,

Z-Wave is a pretty decent standard. There are a few different ways to control different devices (binary switches, multilevel sensors etc.) but within those categories there are plenty of examples and many devices will have some specific examples from those who have gotten them working before also. Basically, you don't have to get it all from one manufacturer. I'm running a USB dongle from one manufacturer, power switches with inbuilt metering from another, and a multi-sensor from another.

The OpenHAB community is really helpful too, forums and such can get you lots of help, and if you choose a good and enthusiastic supplier (<a href="http://www.smartthingsnz.co.nz/store/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Smart Things NZ</a> was the one I used) you may get assistance from them. Also the devices I got did have some documentation with them that detailed the commands and settings applicable to that device.

Hope that helps!

I find it pretty good. My only issue is I have it running on a BeagleBone and haven't hooked extra storage so the MongoDB and logs fill the drive periodically, and there's not enough resource to run the journaling on MongoDB so when there's a power outage or other crash I have to manually resolve the database start.

Other than that, it's pretty good. I think a NUC or other similar small computer could do pretty well as an upgrade, a bit more resource etc.

I am sorry, please read my message as ....apologies for mistake

Hello Daniel, Nice write up. It helped me to understand some basics of Z-Wave. I have been exploring openHAB for quite some time now. It is really very good platform. But I am yet to explore Z-Wave. I want to explore Z-wave now. I was just wondering if you could help in answering some of the queries I have.

I am planning to buy a Z-Wave USB dongle and some light switches + Sensor. If I buy Z-Wave USB from one manufacturer and switches from another manufacturer then would be possible to integrate these using openHAB. My primary question is around the commands that has to be sent to Switches for ON or OFF. Is this a standard protocol or I will have to contact the switch manufacturer to find out the switch Id and the commands that has to be sent to these switches for operating from ON to OFF or from OFF to ON.

Any supporting answer to above will help me to proceed in my mission.
Thanks and Appeciate any help.

Regards,
Rahul
